Tackle Crafters

Tackle Crafters has been family owned and operated for 3 generations.  The family patriarch, Captain Mario Pagano, was a successful charter boat captain in New England.  He fished the waters off Point Judith, Rhode Island in a boat that was aptly named the “Fishtrap”.  Captain Mario had a reputation among his fellow charter boat captains for being “on the fish.”   While he caught a variety of species such as bluefish, codfish, yellow fin tuna and white marlin, he specialized in catching giant Bluefin Tuna.  Mario was blessed with two sons, David and Mark, both of which shared their father’s passion for fishing and joined him at very young ages in the charter boat business, both becoming successful captains in their own right.

Upon retiring from the charter boat business in New England, Captain Pagano moved to Florida and acquired Tackle Crafters.  Tackle Crafters has been manufacturing high quality fishing tackle since 1947.   Mario, together with his wife Judy, dedicated the rest of his life to producing and supplying both professional and recreational fishermen with the best terminal tackle in the industry.  Today, Tackle Crafters is in its 3rd generation of leadership with Captain Pagano’s grandson, Corey, at the helm. Tackle Crafters continues to innovate and develop new tackle for today’s fishermen.

Hysucat

The rocky headland of South Africa is the place where two great oceans — the Indian and Atlantic — meet. It’s also the place where the Hysucat was developed.

Fifteenth century Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias, headed east on a trade mission, called what he thought was the tip of South Africa the Cape of Storms. That he incorrectly identified what today is known as the Cape of Good Hope as the southernmost point (Cape Agulhas, which lies farther south, is) doesn’t matter, the description of the tough marine weather does.

The waters off South Africa are adjacent to seas that contain eddies from the warm-water Agulhas current and the cold-water Benguela current. Also, volatile weather produced from low- and high- pressure systems coming from Antarctica and the South Atlantic Ocean influence conditions. Closer in, onshore setting currents near all headlands, which are bound by reefs, make any type of water travel a test.

This backdrop was the setting for university research and development of a boat in the 1980s that delivers superior control. Hysucat — an acronym for hydrofoil-supported catamaran — became a milestone in the history of hydrofoil technology and has led to a new breed of hybrid hull designs.

Hysucat is the combination of a distinctively designed hull and foil incorporating hydrofoil science and technology. The inventor of the Hysucat patented concept is Professor (emeritus) Karl-Gunter Hoppe, who earned a PhD in naval architecture and taught fluid mechanics at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Malan Conradie, a former student who collaborated with Hoppe, is the creator of today’s Hysucat brand. He’s recognized as one of the world’s most innovative boat designers in the specialty of hydrofoil technology. Conradie had developed and produced more than 1,300 hydrofoil supported catamaran vessels to date, ranging from 16 to 52 feet.

In the early days of research, Hoppe oversaw design and refinement of Hysucat hulls and hydrofoils at the test-tank facility at the university; sea trials followed. The catamaran hull designs and the strategic location of the hydrofoils registered optimal performance, fuel efficiency, wake reduction and improved ride comfort. The superiority of Hoppe’s design was proven when it outperformed others in offshore powerboat competitions.

Alexei Mikhailov and Alexander Obidin launched Bering Yachts in 2007. Longtime friends, they’d partnered on projects as far back as 1990, when they converted a 136-foot commercial steel vessel into a luxury yacht in the eastern Russian port city of Magadan, on the Sea of Okhotsk. In 2001, Alexander started his own shipyard in the famed Volga River region of Russia; meanwhile, Alexei owned a commercial fishing company with a fleet of five trawlers.

After nearly 20 years of dreaming about owning and running their own boatbuilding company, in 2007 the two friends reunited and turned their dream into a reality.

They took their design cues from modern steel North Sea commercial ships, which are built to highly regarded Scandinavian naval architectural standards. Those vessels set the bar that Alexei and Alexander met in their mission of creating uniquely rugged and reliable long-range trawlers.

Today, the Bering Yachts line ranges in size from 50 to 95 feet and is offered in three lines: Expedition, Explorer, and Yachtship. Some models are capable of crossing any ocean with a shorthanded crew of two. Indeed, Bering Yachts prides itself on designing, engineering, and building yachts that can go anywhere and do anything without a large crew or complicated systems.
