AI Overviews Now Cover 80% of Brand Searches. Clicks Aren't the Problem.

561 MediaOctober 2, 20266 min read

On October 1, DemandSphere published daily tracking data showing AI Overviews on branded searches went from roughly 26% of monitored branded queries in early September to 90.48% on September 27, then stayed above 80% through September 29, the last day in the data. Chris Long of Nectiv separately tested 100 enterprise brands and found AI Overviews on 93 of them, Salesforce and Mailchimp included.

Google announced nothing. No changelog entry, no blog post, no Search Status update.

The reaction was uniform: branded click-through rates are about to collapse.

That is not the story for your business.

TL;DR

  • AI Overviews hit more than 80% of tracked branded queries in late September, up from about 26%, per DemandSphere. Google has confirmed no change.
  • Neither study measured clicks. The CTR collapse is an assumption, not a finding.
  • What changed: Google now writes the first paragraph about your company, from sources you do not own.
  • Without specific signal, AI defaults to the biggest name. National chains won 90% to 94% of head-to-head recommendations in a 460,000-response Vaer AI study for Lightspeed.
  • Judge Amit Mehta dismissed Penske Media's and Chegg's AI Overviews suits on September 30. No legal remedy is coming any time soon.

Nobody Searching Your Company Name Is Going To Get Lost

Branded search is the bottom of the funnel. The person typing your name has already decided. They want your phone number, your hours, your pricing page, or the one thing they half-remember from your site. If you think about it in four-layer B2B funnel architecture terms, this is the last layer, not the first.

A zero-click result on an informational query is a visit you lost. A zero-click result on your own brand name is usually a question you answered. Different events. The industry files them under one metric.

Then the measurement gap. Both studies counted whether an AI Overview appeared. Neither touched click data. A drop in branded click-through is possible, and nobody has shown it yet. That is the honest version, and worth repeating when someone forwards you a panic thread about it.

What Changed Is Who Narrates You

Your branded results used to be yours by default. Homepage, sitelinks, Google Business Profile, maybe a knowledge panel. A buyer typed your name and read copy you wrote.

Now, on four out of five of those searches, the first thing they read is a paragraph Google wrote from whatever the open web says about you: review platforms, Reddit threads, old directory listings, competitor comparison pages, a stale service page you forgot you published.

For most of the home services and professional services companies we work with in Palm Beach County, nobody has ever audited that source list. Not once.

That is the real exposure. Not clicks. Narration.

One caveat we are not burying. DemandSphere's numbers swung hard day to day, and the jump from about 30% to 90% happened inside the last week of September with no documentation. That looks like a test, and it may partly reverse. Treat the number as directional until Google confirms it and it holds through October, the same way we read what Google Marketing Live 2026 actually changed. The audit below was worth doing at 26% either way.

When AI Has No Specifics, It Picks the Biggest Name

A study published September 29 gives this teeth. Vaer AI, led by researcher Tom Wells, ran 20,000 shopping prompts through ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews for Lightspeed Commerce, producing roughly 460,000 responses. Lightspeed sells retail software and commissioned the work, so weigh it accordingly.

In head-to-head comparisons, national chains won 90% to 94% of the time when the AI had no live web search. With search on, large retailers still held 46% to 58% of responses. AI Overviews recommended no local store at all in 68% of shopping responses.

One finding there is worth more than the rest combined. Adding the single word "independent" to a prompt dropped the share going to national chains from about 44% to as low as 9%.

Specificity beats size. Read that as an instruction about your own copy, because it is one.

Fixing Your Brand Narrative Fixes Every Engine At Once

This is where the work compounds, because these systems largely read the same web.

In March, Search Engine Land published research by Tom Wells finding that more than 83% of products in ChatGPT shopping carousels matched Google's top 40 organic shopping results, versus about 11% for Bing, across roughly 43,000 products.

The mechanism generalizes. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews all pull from third-party aggregators, review sites and the same crawled pages. Cleaning up what the web says about you is not a Google project. It is the input layer for every answer engine at once, and it is one more place where most businesses still have not deployed AI in any practical sense.

Most agencies are selling the opposite: citations on informational queries you were never going to convert. One is leverage. The other is a report.

The Courts Are Not Coming To Help

On September 30, Judge Amit Mehta of the US District Court for the District of Columbia dismissed Penske Media's and Chegg's Sherman Act suits in a single opinion. The publishers argued Google had an agreement with them, supplying content in exchange for search traffic, and broke it by using that content in AI Overviews. His answer: "an expectation is not an agreement. It is simply how a general search engine works."

Helena World Chronicle and Emmerich Newspapers had already lost a similar case before the same judge in March.

If the owner of Rolling Stone and Variety cannot establish a content-for-traffic bargain in federal court, your site does not have one. Plan for the page as it exists.

What To Do This Week

  1. Screenshot your branded AI Overview. Search your exact company name in a logged-out browser, on mobile and desktop, and write down every source it cites. That list is your real brand narrative, and most owners have never looked at it.
  2. Fix the three weakest sources on it. Old directory listing with the wrong address: claim and correct it. Reddit thread or review page: respond publicly with specific, accurate detail. One of your own pages with vague copy: rewrite the first 40 words to state who you are, what you do, who for, and where.
  3. Put specificity into your category language. Homepage, service pages, Google Business Profile, directory profiles. "Marketing agency" loses to recognition. "HVAC lead generation for Palm Beach County contractors" gets retrieved. The "independent" finding is your proof of concept.

FAQ

Will AI Overviews on my brand name hurt my traffic?

Probably less than you think, and nobody has measured it. The September studies tracked whether AI Overviews appeared, not whether people clicked. Someone searching your company by name has already chosen you, so the real risk is what the summary says about you.

Should I block Google from using my site in AI Overviews?

For almost every business, no. Blocking Google's AI systems removes you from the summary now sitting above your own listing, handing the narration entirely to third parties. Publishers who live on ad impressions face a different calculation than a services business.

Is this worth spending money on right now?

The audit is an afternoon, not a budget item. Fixing bad listings and tightening page copy is work you owed yourself anyway. It becomes a real project only if your summary turns out to be built from competitor comparison pages or stale reviews.

The Reframe

Search used to be about getting found. For your own name, you were always going to get found.

What is new is that the introduction happens before anyone reaches you, written from material you have never read. The companies that win the next year are not the ones with the best citation report. They are the ones who know what the internet says about them and went and fixed it.
