# Google Says AI Mode Slowed Its Ad Growth. It Shipped the Fix the Same Day.

> Google told investors AI Mode monetizes at a lower rate and weighed on Q3 search growth, then expanded AI Mode ads and launched multiturn ads the same day. Organic results get no such repair.

On October 28, Alphabet reported third quarter results. Google Search and other revenue came in at $63.35 billion, up 12% year over year, per Alphabet's earnings release. That line grew 17% in Q2 and 19% in Q1. The stock dropped more than 10%, and the coverage wrote itself: AI is finally eating Google's search business.

The same day, Google expanded ads inside AI Mode to ten more countries and launched multiturn ads in the US.

Both things are true. The obvious conclusion is wrong. AI Mode slowed Google's search growth, Google's own executives said so on the call, and Google had already built its repair. You did not get one.

### TL;DR

- Google Search and other revenue grew 12% in Q3 2026, down from 17% in Q2 and 19% in Q1.

- Philipp Schindler named three drivers of the slowdown: currency, a few vertical-specific swings, and fast AI Mode query growth on a surface that monetizes at a lower rate.

- Pichai said Search query growth is the highest in five years, and AI is driving it, including commercial queries. Demand is up.

- The same day, Google took AI Mode ads into ten countries and launched US multiturn ads. Nobody is adding organic slots.

### Google Told You Exactly Why Its Search Growth Slowed

This is the part most coverage skipped.

On the call, an analyst asked Schindler to explain the gap between five-year-high query growth and slower search revenue. Per Alphabet's own call transcript, he gave three reasons. Currency was the single largest driver. Vertical swings came second: APAC retail advertisers hit by the EU ending its de minimis exemption, and media spend normalizing after a World Cup-heavy Q2. Then the one that matters for you: "the strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode."

Google did not say people are searching less. Google said more people are searching on a surface that earns less per query.

Pichai settled the demand question in the release: "Our AI investments are driving overall Search query growth, including commercial queries. In fact, our year-over-year query growth rate is the highest it's been in the last five years."

### The AI Mode Part Is an Inventory Problem, Not a Demand Problem

Google Search and other revenue was $63.27 billion in Q2 2026. In Q3 it was $63.35 billion. Sequentially flat, roughly a tenth of a percent, in a quarter when total Alphabet revenue grew about 25% year over year to $127.58 billion.

Currency and a strong World Cup quarter explain some of that. They do not explain why Google brought up AI Mode monetization unprompted in the same answer. Search demand at a five-year growth high, with a growing share of it landing on a surface that sells less per query. That is an inventory problem.

Inventory problems get fixed by building inventory.

### Google Shipped Its Fix the Same Day

The October 28 announcement scales AI Mode ads into Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico and the UK planned for Q4 2026.

For US advertisers the bigger item is multiturn ads. A Google spokesperson told Search Engine Roundtable: "Multiturn ads show up on responses to follow-up user queries as users engage in back and forth conversations with AI Mode." They carry a "Sponsored" label. It is the next step on Google's own roadmap for AI ad formats.

Before multiturn, one conversation was one monetizable moment. Now every follow-up can carry an ad. A homeowner asking "why is my AC short cycling," then "cost to replace an air handler in Florida," can now produce two commercial impressions in one session.

Google says click-through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product listings in AI Mode. Barry Schwartz publicly questioned whether that holds for text links, which are far less visual than product listings, so treat it as unproven for service businesses.

Google disclosed its AI Mode monetization gap and started building inventory to close it on the same day.

### You Will Not Get a Multiturn Organic Result

When a search surface loses ad slots, Google has a product team, a revenue mandate and a shareholder calendar pushing to add them back. When a surface loses organic slots, nothing happens.

The best public measurement of the click cost is Pew Research, which analyzed browsing data from 900 US adults in March 2025. Users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% for those who did not. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. That is why you want a funnel architecture that does not depend on a click.

Those ratios are dated, and Google called the methodology flawed. The direction is not contested, including by Google's own choice to build conversational ad inventory and not conversational organic placement.

Google recovers its revenue per query. You do not recover your sessions per query.

### The Line Nobody Read: The Open Web Is Flat

Google Network revenue, what Google makes serving ads on other people's sites and apps, went from $7.354 billion in Q3 2025 to $7.455 billion in Q3 2026, per the release. That is 1.4% growth year over year, against 12% for Search and 9.2% for YouTube ads.

The open web as an advertising asset is barely growing. Google's own surfaces are. If much of your display or programmatic budget buys publisher inventory, you are funding the one line on Alphabet's ad statement that has nearly stopped moving.

Advertising is also now the slower-growing part of Alphabet, 64.3% of revenue against 72.5% a year ago, inside a company that spent $51.4 billion on capital expenditures last quarter and ran free cash flow of negative $9.1 billion. A slower-growing division inside a company spending that heavily gets pushed for yield. Expect more ad slots per query and upward pressure on what a commercial click costs. That is not a claim about Google's intentions. It is what the arithmetic rewards.

### What To Do This Week

- Pull your search terms report. Take the last 90 days in Google Ads and flag every query of eight words or more. Those look like the follow-up turns multiturn now monetizes. Check whether your ad copy answers them or just names your service.

- Build one report that sets sessions aside. Track branded impressions from Search Console, direct traffic, and form fills or calls, weekly, for six months. If impressions and conversions hold while sessions fall, your visibility is intact and your measurement is broken. If impressions fall too, you have a demand problem. Most owners are panicking about the wrong one.

- Audit the first 40 words under the headline on your top 20 commercial pages. If the opening does not answer that page's target question in plain language, rewrite it. Extractable answers get quoted, and a quote with your name on it is the only organic real estate on that surface.

### FAQ

#### Is Google search dying?

No, and the Q3 2026 numbers argue the opposite. Google says its query growth rate is the highest in five years, and Search revenue still grew 12% to $63.35 billion. What is shrinking is how many searches end in a visit to your site. That is a distribution change, not a demand collapse.

#### Should I pause Google Ads because of AI Mode?

No. Pausing hands new inventory to a competitor. AI Mode and multiturn ads are being added, not removed. Tighten measurement before you cut spend.

#### My traffic is down but my leads are flat. What does that mean?

Usually that your visibility held and your clicks did not, which is what AI answers produce. Fewer people click because more got what they needed on the results page, and those who still click sit closer to buying. Verify with six months of branded impressions and conversions first.

### The Shift Is Not Coming. It Is Priced In.

Google told the market its newest search surface earns less per query than the old one, then told advertisers it is adding ad inventory there. Two announcements, one day. Everyone else operates on a surface they do not control, with fewer slots and no roadmap to add more. As with every AI shift so far, the tool was never the advantage; how you measure and respond is.

So stop measuring your business in sessions. Sessions now measure Google's product decisions more than your demand.
